ABOUT

Åsa Gamgam Leanderzis a visual artist with a Master’s degree in Painting from the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. Her creative path weaves through small villages and cultural capitals across Europe, shaped by studies at folk high schools and municipal art schools.

A fascination with drawing and painting began early in life and influenced Åsa’s choice of a Natural Science program with an aesthetic profile in secondary school. She later studied photography at Mullsjö Folkhögskola, spending long hours in the darkroom developing black-and-white prints and immersing herself in the artistic environment of Mullsjö’s boarding school. These years were formative—filled with late nights in the studio, where her visual language began to take shape.

Åsa started painting in acrylics before moving on to oil on large canvases. This marked the beginning of her deep engagement with color and composition—sparking the realization that she wanted to become a professional artist.

Pursuing her dream, she moved to France to study at the École Municipale d’Arts Plastiques in Nice, where she was accepted directly into the second year of the program Les Cours Permanents. There she continued developing her skills in life drawing and painting.

Åsa then joined the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts as a guest student, later completing her Master’s in Painting. Her final semester included a two-month artist residency at Hôtel Chevillonin Grez-sur-Loing, France—a historic hub for Nordic artists in Paris.

After returning to Sweden, she has participated in both group and solo exhibitions.

In parallel with her art practice, Åsa trained as a nurse and then as a midwife, and today she holds a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Skövde. Her research explores existential health, vulnerability, and digital support during the transition to parenthood—areas that often echo in her visual work.
